On Saturday, January 30, 2010, Buttermilk Mountain, in Aspen Colorado was crawling with spectators as that athletes of the Winter X-Games XIV continued to amaze. This year, the event spanned four days, January 28– January 31, 2010, hosting 250 of athletes from all over the world, including 39 Olympic competitors. Read the story here.
The first ever Extreme Games were held in Rhode Island from June 24 – July 1, 1995 and featured an array of international extreme-sports athletes. The event boasted 27 events in nine categories, 198,000 spectators and seven sponsors. A little over 15 years later, the Extreme Games have transformed into the X-Games and expanded to include winter sports as well as summer sports. This year, Aspen hosted the games for the ninth year in a row. The event featured four categories, snowboard, freeski, snowmobile, and X Course, 21 events in all and two new events, Snowmobile Knock Out and SuperPipe High Air. Athletes such as Shaun White, Bobby Brown, Gretchen Bleiler, Kelly Clark, Nate Holland, Lindsay Jacobellis, Justin Hoyer and Heath Frisby astounded the world with tailored tricks and outstanding performances. Rapper 50 Cent also made an appearance at the games, breaking up the heat of competition for a half hour to belt out a few hits. Word has it that spectator counts at the Winter X-Games VIX broke records and will continue to rock Aspen and Snowmass Village for two more years, more than rounding out an entire decade for the host of the Winter X-Games.
